Why we build startup websites on WordPress

When you’re launching something new, your website has two jobs. It has to look credible the day it goes live, and it has to keep up with you as the business changes. The last thing you want is to rebuild it in a year because you’ve outgrown it.

That’s why most of the sites we build start on WordPress. Here’s what that actually means for you — in plain English.

You can update it yourself

New service? Updated prices? A team photo that isn’t from three years ago? You shouldn’t have to email a developer and wait. WordPress gives you a straightforward dashboard for your pages, posts and images. We set it up so the things you’ll change often are easy to find, and the things that hold the design together stay out of the way.

It looks like your brand, not a template

With thousands of themes and plugins, you’re never boxed in. We build on a solid foundation and design around your brand — your colours, your type, your voice — so the site looks like it belongs to a business people can trust, not a theme demo.

It works on every screen

Most people will find you on their phone first. Every site we build is fully responsive, so it works just as well on a phone or tablet as it does on a laptop. Nobody should have to pinch and zoom to find your contact details.

It helps people find you

WordPress gives search engines clean, well-structured pages to work with, and tools like Yoast SEO make it simple to set page titles, descriptions and social previews. It won’t do your marketing for you — nothing will — but it gives you a strong start. We also set up Google Analytics, Search Console and Tag Manager as standard, so you can see what’s working from day one.

It grows when you do

Start with five pages. Add a blog when you’ve got something to say. Add a shop when you’re ready to sell — WooCommerce is built for exactly that, and it powers a huge number of online stores. You add features as you need them, on the same site, without starting again.

It doesn’t cost the earth

WordPress itself is free. You’ll pay for hosting, a domain and the occasional premium plugin, but the overall cost is usually far lower than a custom-coded build or a platform that charges more as you grow. That matters when every pound of your launch budget has a job to do.

You’re not on your own — or locked in

WordPress is open source, with a huge community behind it, so there’s an answer to almost every question and a steady stream of improvements. It also means you’re never tied to one agency or one platform. If you ever want to move, your site and your content come with you.

It’s secure — as long as it’s looked after

This is the honest bit. WordPress is only as secure as it is maintained, and out-of-date plugins are the most common way sites get into trouble. That’s why we offer hosting and maintenance: regular back-ups, security monitoring, and plugin and theme updates handled for you, so you can get on with running your business.

When WordPress isn’t the answer

For most founders it’s the right call, but not always. If you only need a single holding page for a few weeks, or you’re building a complex web app rather than a website, we’ll tell you — and point you towards something better suited.

The short version

  • You can update it yourself, without waiting on a developer.
  • It looks like your brand — on every screen.
  • It gives search engines a clean start, and you the data to see what’s working.
  • It grows with you, from five pages to a full online shop.
  • It’s affordable, open and well supported.
